How tough was it to make First Crossings?
The brand new series, First Crossings screens every Tuesday at 8.30pm on TV ONE.
The idea of it is relatively simple (in theory!)
Two modern-day New Zealand adventurers, Kevin Bigger and Jamie Fitzgerald recreate the journeys of pioneer New Zealand explorers, not just by walking in their footsteps but by wearing the same clothes, using the same equipment and trying the same food.
In the first episode, Kevin and Jamie travel back to 1868 to retrace the journey of road engineers Henry Whitcombe and Jacob Lauper, as they attempted to find a route for a pass through the Southern Alps.
But, as you'll see in the video below, the duo weren't prepared for the treacherous weather.
That was the least of their worries though - as the physical toll of what was needed of them began to show..
First Crossings is on TV ONE, Tuesdays at 8.30pm - and will be on TVNZ Ondemand to view as well.
