Verge Showcase: The next big thing

Verge Showcase: The next big thing

You've got to hand it to the guys from Verge.

On Tuesday they gave five fledgling designers the opportunity to showcase their collections at Fashion Week, while competing for a $10,000 grant.

Bear in mind Verge is a fashion label, and the money they dished out today could have been given to a future competitor.

The Verge showcase featured Michelle Yvette, Sable & Minx, Deuchar, Emma and Ana Steele. Each label designs for women. There were certain consistencies between the collections - tights, tights and more tights - but the similarities seemed to end there.

Michelle Yvette kicked off with a cultural parade and candle lighting session (as you do...) Her first model stripped off a burka to strut down the catwalk. Yvette's collection featured tailored jackets, bows, even knitted garments featuring reindeer. She favoured bright block colours, especially red and blue.

Sable & Minx was my personal favourite. Designed to incorporate a "twist of femininity and luxury" the range had an almost femme-fatale feeling to it with berets and careful tailoring.

Deuchar was undoubtedly Kiwi, with dark checks, jackets and plenty of wool.

Emma got the winter woollies out, while exploring her fairytale theme.

Finally, Ana Steele's collection hit the runway, featuring longer T-shirts, dresses and hoodies each featuring a signature print.

The $10,000 grant was awarded to Michelle Yvette, who wrangled the giant cheque off the catwalk with dignity.
