Should all women wear colour?

Are there rules in fashion that must be broken? Is it more important to be stylish or comfortable?

We asked our top designers to reveal the one piece of fashion advice they'd offer New Zealand women...

Francis Hooper (World):

Be more adventurous with colour shape and character! Fashion is something to celebrate and enjoy! Not dread and feel guilty about!

Annah Stretton:

Don't be a slave to the latest trends, create your own style, it will make you a lot more interesting.

Celine Chapman (Celine Rita):

Wear something that makes you feel beautiful/cool/amazing while wearing it! And add a bit of colour into your wardrobe every now and then.

James Dobson (Jimmy D):

Be adventurous! Those first few steps out of your comfort zone can be terrifying, but you'll never look back. And, there is no such thing as having too much black in your wardrobe.

Cybèle:

My best tip is ignore tips! Go with what you like rather than what is in or what you're supposed to do - breaking the rules once in a while is fun and that's what fashion should be.

Mena's designers:

Don't worry so much about what's 'in' - focus more about dressing to suit your figure and colouring. We believe all women can wear colour - you just need to find out which ones.

Michelle Yvette:

Try some colour and stop being so conservative! Dare to be noticed for the right reasons.

Kathryn Wilson:

If you feel great wearing what you've chosen you'll no doubt look great while you're wearing it... theres a lot to be said for confidence and comfort.

Jeremy Maclaurin and Chelsea Thorpe (neverblack):

Chelsea: Wear only what suits you or if that isn't your thing wear something that works with your personality and makes you feel good.

Jeremy: Wear what you are comfortable in and don't be afraid to experiment with clothing.

Theresa Brady (Sable & Minx, Brady):

Find what suits and flatters you, then innovate on your personal style to make it your own.

Abby van Schreven and Emilie Pullar (Maiike):

Wear clothes that say something about you and don't be too concerned with following trends.

Murray Crane (Crane Brothers) offers this advice for grooms:

Buy well and buy once.

Kirsha Whitcher (Salasai):

Love what you wear you can never go wrong with grey marl, black and white!

Elizabeth Brady (Brady):

A pair of killer shoes turn any outfit into a fashion statement!

Kelly Coe (Augustine International):

Dress up more! Make more of an effort everyday and try new things that you wouldn't normally wear.

New Zealand woman can be very conservative in their dressing and wear far far far too much black and basic pieces. There is no reason why you can't wear a beautiful silk print tunic to the office, just put it back with a great skinny jean and heels.

And the one most important thing is that when you become a mum, that is no excuse to loose all sense of style! Find the time to get a great hair cut, put on a pair of jeans that suck everything in, put on a colourful top and some fab heels and rock it!

Teresa Hodges (Blak):

Wear what you love, it will inspire you and give you confidence and attitude. Play and mix it up but keep it simple in some way, don't let the clothes overrule you.

Laurie Foon (Starfish):

Make sure you feel good in your clothes. A good colour and fit will lead to you feeling good and having your garments as favourites in your wardrobe.
