Just how protected are your personal details when you hire a Rug Doctor carpet cleaning machine?

Fair Go found names, addresses, phone numbers, driver licenses - even credit card details complete with expiry dates - all laid out for other customers to see.

Two forms of identification have to be shown in order to hire a Rug Doctor. The carpet cleaning machines are available at 500 outlets (mainly supermarkets) nationwide.

Rug Doctor recommends driver's licences, passports or credit cards.

Fair Go visited 7 outlets with a hidden camera to see how easy it was to access identity details from rug doctor customers.
While staff at a few outlets kept customer details under wraps - not letting us fill out the rental book, most of the stores we visited left us alone - unsupervised in full view of personal information from other Rug Doctor customers. Names, addresses, credit card numbers - complete with expiry dates - left in the wrong hands - could steal your identity.

Rug Doctor say they have never heard of any identity theft taking place and have taken steps to improve their procedures.
Store staff have been issued with a reminder and a new rental book has been sent off to the printers.
