Our three month investigation into counterfeit electrical imports is closing in on those responsible. Tonight Fair Go tracks down an importer of fake GHD hair straighteners. We've had complaints these fakes have been burning and melting. There's never been a conviction in New Zealand for bringing counterfeit electronics into the country. Fair Go is working with police to change this. The offence is punishable with a maximum penalty of ten years in jail. For a prosecution the person has to be knowingly selling counterfeit goods. The importer Justine Staiger told us her last consignment of fake GHD's was seized at the border. She says she didn't know they were fakes until Customs called. She also said she thought they were "genuine copies." Ms Staiger works for her father in Hamilton. His lawyers have issued a statement saying it was nothing to do with him or his company but a project undertaken on his daughter's own account.
