Convenience is king. Why stand in the queue at the bank when you can get most of your banking done online from your own home?
With more of us doing our banking online it's essential we know who we're dealing with at the other end of the computer.
Fair Go's been investigating the first case of a fake bank. The bancommerceonline.com site come complete with New Zealand contact details. The phone number and address leads to an accountancy firm Company Solutions on Auckland's North Shore. But they say they're victims too and believe a disaffected customer of one of their clients stole their details and started the site.
The site bancommerceonline.com seems to have been assembled using graphics and details from other banks, including an environmental certification CEMARS swiped from our own Landcare Research. They were the ones who tumbled the original site.
Since then we've found two more authentic looking banking websites with New Zealand contact details. The first fake bank has been reported to the Reserve Bank, the Commerce and Securities Commissions. The maximum penalty for imitating a New Zealand bank is a year in jail for an individual and a million dollar fine for a company.
We're advising people to check the website address of their
online bank because these scammers could be looking for passwords,
phishing for credit card details or after your personal details for
identity theft.
