The racing season is upon us and fine fillies and gents everywhere are on their annual quest to find the perfect hat.
Do you start with the hat and then base your look around this, especially if it is a real showstopper? Or do you find the most amazing dress and then find the ultimate hat to compliment your look?
We all have different methods of how we work but one thing you always need to remember (despite how badly you want to stand out from the crowd) is to find a hat that actually suits you and one you can be 100% confident in.
Does the hat suit your face shape? Does it compliment your outfit or does it look garish and OTT?
If you are extremely petite, does it overwhelm you?
Hats should reflect your personality and can also show others that you have a sense of humour.
But while millinery can be fun and whimsical, elegance and taste should always be at the forefront of your mind. You don't want to end up being the race day "clown" i.e. the butt of everyone's jokes.
Dramatic looks can be amazing but always think about the overall look, think of balance and harmony in designs.
The actual silhouette of the hat is extremely important as it frames your face.
Even tilting a hat at the wrong angle can ruin a look a look and completely change it.
Yes, there are a lot of things to remember here! Race day millinery can seem a bit complicated so when in doubt, always seek professional help.
There are so many different hats to be donned these days. From large-brimmed hats, trilbys and man style versions to traditional cloches, pill boxes and mini-toppers.
Lots of ladies opt for fascinators or simply flowers in the hair.
Natalie Chan does a wonderful range, check them out.
Have fun at the races!!
