David Bain's long-time supporter Joe Karam has sounded a warning to a Wellington theatre company putting on a play about the Bain family murders, saying it's "treading on thin ice".
But he also told ONE News that he was not interested in commenting on the production, because "it's a play and doesn't matter".
Downstage Theatre's "The December Brother" has two different versions of the killings, one with David as the protagonist, one with his father Robin, and leaves the audience to make up its own mind.
Director Tim Spite said the production sought legal advice over the possibility of defamation but it was deemed relatively low-risk.
"We're not artists if we're not kind of holding the mirror up to that aspect of society and saying look this is how we're dealing with things," Spite said.
The play opens at Wellington's Downstage Theatre on Saturday.
