Vampire flick Twilight's not even out here in New Zealand yet (it opens Boxing Day, tween fans as if you need telling) but the sequel's already got problems.

The first film was such a success in its opening weekend in America, that New Moon, the follow up book in Stepehenie Meyer's hit series, was greenlighted before the dust had settled on the $70m box office take.

Well overnight, it's been widely reported that the search is on for a replacement to Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke.

In a release from Summit Entertainment, the studio said it couldn't agree on a schedule with Hardwicke for the release of New Moon because of the amount of time she wanted to do to prep for the movie.

The sequel's expected to be out late 2009 or early 2010 and that didn't tie up with how Hardwicke envisaged the latest franchise to take a bite out of the tween market.

Hardwicke has also released a statement to Entertainment Weekly which says: "I am sorry that due to timing I will not have the opportunity to direct New Moon. Directing Twilight has been one the great experiences of my life, and I am grateful to the fans for their passionate support of the film. I wish everyone at Summit the best with the sequelit is a great story."

Nevertheless, the fact the studio's already looking for another director means fans of the phenomenally successful 4 book series won't have to worry.

You can bet this is one vampire they won't be taking a stake too sooner than they have to.
