The debate's raging about who will helm the sequel to Twilight aka New Moon .

We've already told you that Twilight's director Catherine Hardwicke's no longer slated to direct  the film because of differences of opinion over scheduling.

Well, the hot contender in Hollywood at the moment (who according to Entertainment Weekly's been given an offer  ) is Chris Weitz.

Aka the guy who brought us American Pie, About a Boy and The Golden Compass .

Weitz is apparently on good terms with TPTB (the Powers That Be) at Summit Entertainment who release the films - and the article in EW says "While Summit insists 'we have not yet signed Chris Weitz to do New Moon,' and Weitz's agency says no deal has been signed, other sources say the deal is imminent, and that Summit has stopped negotiations with other potential Moon directors. Summit had planned to announce this hiring decision on Sunday, Dec. 14"

So it could be an early Christmas present for Weitz - but rumour has it that's not all that's troubling the second part of Stephenie Meyer's blockbuster books series.

Entertainment Weekly is also reporting sources have told them the studio isn't looking to hire back  Taylor Lautner who plays Jacob as he's too young looking.

Crikey - has a sequel ever been plagued with so many problems before it's even started filming?

Twilight is released in New Zealand on Boxing Day and is sure to be massive here.
