Hot Aussie star Ryan Kwanten has taken a break from the vampires on True Blood to play a superhero in the new Aussie movie Griff The Invisible.

The romantic comedy by debut feature film writer and director Leon Ford has started filming in Sydney.

Kwanten plays Griff, an office worker by day, superhero by night, whose world is turned upside down when he meets Melody, a beautiful young scientist who shares his passion for the impossible (played by Beautiful Kate's Maeve Dermody).

"By day, Griff works in an office. By night, he is a superhero - or is he?" Kwanten said.

"It was this question that attracted me to the role. Griff is such an original and boundless character to play.

"Every boy dreams of being a superhero and I've accepted my mission to bring this one to life."

Kwanten appeared on Home and Away before rising to international fame on the cult US vampire series True Blood.

"It is a superhero movie and it is a comedy," director Leon Ford said.

"But at its core it's a simple love story about two very unique individuals finding each other and giving the other the strength to be what they want to be."

Griff The Invisible is produced by Nicole O'Donohue, with executive producers Jan Chapman (The Piano, Lantana, Bright Star) and Scott Meek (Velvet Goldmine, TV series Bastard Boys).

It will be distributed by Transmission Films, the company behind some of the most successful Australian films of the year, including Samson & Delilah, Balibo and Charlie & Boots.

Griff The Invisible is expected to release nationally in late 2010.
