Tom Cruise has paid what is being described as a social visit to film director Peter Jackson in Wellington.

ONE News got exclusive shots of Cruise just as he was winding up his brief Wellington stopover but most locals only realised he was there after he had left.

Sources told ONE News the Hollywood star dropped in on his Lear jet on Wednesday, had a sleepover at Jackson's Masterton mansion and then choppered back to the capital to fly out again.

Jackson's people say the pair are mates and Cruise was just saying "hi" on his way to see wife Katie Holmes and daughter Suri in Melbourne where Holmes is filming the horror movie Don't Be Afraid of the Dark.

Wingnut Films spokesman Matt Dravitski says Cruise knows Jackson and he wanted to visit his studios.

Dravitski says Cruise was not discussing any future projects with Jackson and it was just a social visit.

A role for Cruise in The Hobbit seems unlikely - the same goes for Tin Tin and The Dam Busters .

But gaming fans will be hoping the pair are breathing new life into the much-awaited but much-delayed Halo project.

Neill Blomkamp is still believed to be keen to direct Halo and with the success of his Jackson-produced film District 9 , he may just have gained some Hollywood traction.
