Susan Boyle - our kind of person

You may remember a British entertainer from the 1990s who got himself into a little trouble after a young man died at a party at his house .

That man was Michael Barrymore, who briefly moved to New Zealand to escape the British paparazzi.

Now in 1994 he was quite the golden boy of television and he had a little segment on his show, later to become a show in it's own right, called My Kind of People. The idea of the show was that Barrymore hit malls and arcades around the UK offering people the chance to show their talents to crowds of stay-at-home mums and pensioners doing their mid-week shopping.

Turns out that among the amateur magicians and precocious kids was young woman called Susan Boyle. Dressed in a coral blazer and with a massive scrunchy in her hair she "flirted" with Barrymore who pretended to try and look up her skirt - hilarious?!

She was singing Elaine Page numbers even then...

Who would have thought that 15 years later it would be Susan Boyle that was raking in the media attention, while Barrymore continued to try and resurrect a career dogged by rumour, innuendo and addiction.

What do you think about this whole Susan Boyle business? Global phenomena or manufactured star? Share your thoughts on the message board below.

Great voice, a better wider range of songs than Paul Potts, hope she goes far and still maintain her natural nature. Don't judge anything by it's cover, you never know what's inside.
