Blow-dries are a girl's best friend!

This week we give you an insider's glimpse into how we make all our stars here at TVNZ look so fabulous every day. The secret is that it's all about getting a great blow-dry. A pro-grade blow-dry can make a look go from drab to fab!

It can also totally change your appearance. For example, not many people know that co-presenter of Breakfast, Pippa Wetzell, and ONE News anchor, Wendy Petrie, both have very curly hair in real life.

You'd never know this is because our team here are truly the best in the biz, banging out beautifully smooth blow-dries, day in and out!

Here's a few tricks of the trade!

1). Make sure you have freshly washed and conditioned hair.

Prepping the hair is essential!

For fine hair we love: Kerastase Resistance Bain Volumactive Shampoo

2) Find the right product for your hair.

If you have thick hair go for a cream or relaxing balm to get some control.

Those with fine hair need a body-building mousse.

Sea salt sprayed into the hair is also great for creating texture without weighing the hair down.

Also, a heat-styling protective agent is important to protect those tresses.

We love Kerastase Nutritive Nectar Thermique leave in conditioner.

3) Dry your hair off until it is 80% dry.

This is a really important trick. Tip your head upside down and use your fingers to dry your hair off as much as possible.

4). With the tail end of a comb, section your hair with either sectioning clips or butterfly clips. Also, start with the fringe first and then, start from the nape to the crown. From there, move from the forehead to the crown and then the sides.

Use a large, boar-head bristle radial brush to get maximum volume, roll the hair around the brush right up to the roots to create movement.

Get a powerful, professional style blow-dryer.

We love Parlux Milano hairdryers

5). After each section you have blow-dried, blast off with the dryer on cold to set the hair.

6). Backcomb the hair at the roots to get some height if needed.

7.) Dress the hair out and then set with a fine mist of hairspray.

Extra tips

Use the nozzle of the blow-dryer to direct the hot hair in one concentrated direction, down the shaft. This is the key to a smooth and glossy blow-dry, it keeps the cuticles of the hair down so hair looks polished.

-Beware of being too overzealous with shine serums. Unless you have insanely crazy curly or frizzy hair, use only a smidgen and avoid the roots.

-A good blow-dry should last a couple of days, so avoid getting hair in wet and steamy environments.

-If your hair is starting to wilt after a couple of days, throw in Velcro curlers and spray with hairspray to give extra "oomph"!

-Oil is not your best friend and equals lank, flat hair. Try a bit of baby powder in the roots of your hair.

Now there's no reason you can't have give yourself a professional looking blow-dry at home!
