Last weekend Style Blog was in Sydney, catching up with friends and family and, of course, going on a whirlwind shop-a-thon!
We love the vibrancy and energy of Sydney and its 4.5 million inhabitants are certainly a happy bunch! It's obvious that the beachy lifestyle Sydney-siders enjoy creates a more laidback approach to life.
The look the younger folk in Sydney channel is similar to the LA style. We saw lots of faded, distressed, cut-off denim shorts, with white singlets, knotted to reveal the midriff section. There was so much skin on show - the girls over there certainly aren't afraid of showing off their bodies!
The girls also love wearing ethnic-inspired jewellery paired back with chunky desert boots or flat sandals to complete their look. Kesha anyone? Beachy, "undone" hair is casually tied up in a soft bun/top-knot and make up is minimal as the look is all about healthy and clean, glowing skin.
The Sydney lads are a lot more "coiffured" then their Kiwi counterparts. Their hair is always "done" and they tend to love wearing jeans (Ksubi) and brightly coloured designer t-shirts with extremely low v-necklines. Topping off the look is always a pair of seriously cool designer shades.
Sydney is a dream for shopaholics!
Here's our must-go to list:
David Jones
Like bees to honey, we always head straight to David Jones, where they have the designer floor featuring huge names in down-under fashion such as: Willow, Sass and Bide, Lisa Ho, Collette Dinnigan and our very own Trelise Cooper to name a few! Don't forget to check out the incredible shoe department where they have Marc Jacobs, Jimmy Choos and other amazing designer shoes a-plenty!
Westfield Shopping Centre Pitt Street Mall
The new Westfield Pitt Street Mall complex is amazing! Our first port of call (via Gucci of course) was the Christian Louboutin store! This store is heaven on earth! We went crazy over a pair of raspberry patent leather peep toe ridiculously high shoes! We can also look forward to the opening of Spanish based chain-store Zara in April (yippee!) and also other top designers i.e. Mui Mui and Bottega Veneta a little bit later on down the track.
Sportsgirl
You can always count on Sportsgirl for some great pieces that are always on the pulse of fashion and won't break the bank.
QVB
The historic Queen Victoria Building is always great for all your beloved chain-stores such as Country Road and Veronika Maine, etc.
The Strand Arcade
It's still worth your time to take a trip back to what shopping used to be like pre-malls! Many Aussie designers have little boutique stores here such as Wayne Cooper, Lisa Ho, Jayson Brunsdon, Alex Perry and Allanah Hill, to name a few. Check out Fleur Wood for girly joy, the Corner Store for amazing one-off pieces and Gary Castles Shoes and Terry Biviano Shoes for all your shoe fantasies come true!
Glenmore Road, Paddington
This area is a treasure trove of fashion with Kiwi designers Kate Sylvester, World and Zambesi flanking top Australian labels Zimmermann, Kirrily Johnston, Arabella Ramsey, Camilla and Marc, Ksubi and Scanlan and Theodore, to name a few.
For Vintage finds go to:
The Surry Hills Markets
These markets are held on the first Saturday of the month and are
always packed with all sorts of vintage delights.
The Bondi Markets
Held every Sunday, these markets are great for finding up and
coming designer pieces along with vintage treasures. Just like the
Surry Hills Markets, it's also a fantastic place for people
watching.
The Kirribilli Markets
You can scoop up loads of pre-loved designer gear here and the
bower-bird in you will adore all the knick-knacks on show.
Grandma takes a Trip
Located on Crown Street in Surry Hills this retro store is a haven
for vintage junkies
Mr Stinky
We love this store! It's always worth a rummage!
Cosmopolitan Shoes
If you are after amazing shoes, head to this store in Double Bay immediately! YSL, Jimmy Choo, Dolce & Gabbana and Balenciaga to name a few. Beware though, it's very, very expensive! Yikes!
American Apparel
This store is on Oxford Street, Darlinghurst, and it's your one-stop shop for all your basics needed for everyone's working wardrobe.
Westfield Bondi Junction
Sydney-ites dub this "WBJ". This massive mall has David Jones and Myer all under one huge roof but most importantly, the Jimmy Choo store, OMG!
We also love, love, love the Chanel store.
You can spend all day at WBJ but beware - you will be completely broke by the end of the day!
Be sure to check out the amazing foodcourt on the top floor with the stunning panoramic view of Sydney. We also love having a glass of wine and some tasty tapas downstairs at DJ's (David Jones) on the fabulous food floor.
For a bit of love and a cuddle, visit the pet store on Level 4. They always have the most gorgeous puppies for sale. You will want to take them home with you though!
For Fabric:
The best fabric store in Sydney is undoubtedly Tessuti located on Commonwealth Street, Surry Hills (where Fabric Fantasy used to be). It has the most incredible selection of beautiful European designer fabrics.
Happy shopping in Sydney and see you all next week!
