El Jay and Christian Dior
Last week Style Blog attended the opening of "Looking Terrific-the
Story of El Jay", an exhibition celebrating the amazing
achievements of New Zealand's first fashion industry leader Gus
Fisher.
Gus headed the House of El Jay for nearly 50 years and what makes him so important is that he was the sole New Zealand licensee for Christian Dior.
Gus bought French style and class to New Zealand in a time when the range of fashion available here was extremely limited.
Through his label, El Jay, Gus was given exclusive rights to manufacture and sell Christian Dior originals and Dior prêt-a-porter in the New Zealand market.
Gus came up with his own interpretations of Parisian couture and was completely on the pulse of fashion in his day. The importance of El Jay has now been resurrected and finally realised by the New Zealand fashion industry thanks to this fascinating exhibition.
If you look through the wardrobes of many a well dressed woman from that era, you are bound to find some highly collectable El Jay/Christian Dior pieces in there.
One half of Style Blog even found some amazing El Jay love in her own Mum's wardrobe and astonishingly enough, they still fit her like a glove. Good on you Mum!
'Soul'd Out' Catwalk Cuisine
Moving swiftly from New Zealand fashion's past to what's happening
right here and now, around 400 guests recently attended Soul Bar's
'Soul'd Out' Catwalk Cuisine event which was a brilliant fusion of
great food and wine and fashion.
The latest collections and after-five looks were on show from top kiwi designers: Trelise Cooper, Yvonne Bennetti, Working Style, Sabatini White, Bendon and also pieces from Muse boutique.
Accessories were provided by Dyrberg/Kern and the models make up was done by the team at Bobbi Brown. The beautiful pre-Raphaelite hair-dos were thanks to Servilles.
This was also a fashion show that had a heart with every $10 of the event's tickets being donated to the Breast Cancer Research Trust.
Here's a glimpse of the fab looks we saw!
