One of the hottest accessories you can wear right now is a pair of spectacles.
Naturally enough, the right pair of specs not only frames your face but also highlights your best features.
Many of our stars here at TVNZ are spec-wearers, such as Simon Dallow and Paul Henry. Waving the female flag is gorgeous Breakfast co-host, Pippa Wetzell, who wears glasses when she's not on air. Pippa looks fantastic in her specs and gives off a smart and sexy librarian vibe!
The days when wearing glasses were reserved for nerds are long gone. On the contrary, "geek chic" is at its height. The fashion world has embraced this look for a while now and it doesn't look like it's abating anytime soon.
Having "four-eyes" is now the epitome of cool and we even see off-duty models, rock-stars and actors sporting a pair despite not even needing a prescription! We love a good fashion victim!
Ever since Marilyn Monroe donned a pair of horn-rimmed glasses in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and 1950s poster boy, James "Jimmy" Dean brooded in his, everyone has wanted a pair of specs on the end of their nose to emulate such a look. The biggest trend in eyewear is a return to "old school glamour" and sleek silhouettes.
The old adage "Men don't make passes at girls who wear glasses" is actually completely untrue, as many a be-spectacled lass will tell you!
There is something alluring about glasses, and, as we all know, glasses create an air of intelligence and sophistication (which sometimes can be far from the truth!)
There is also the idea of the cool, aloof "jolie-laird" (or "ugly beauty") whose awkward vulnerability is also highly attractive in all its eccentricity.
Now all those one-time geeky "ugly ducklings" have finally gotten payback after years of cruel taunting at school.
Style Blog recently attended an OPSM event that featured the hottest new season eyewear and here's what we liked.
OPSM Spring/Summer 2010 Collection (available in stores from Sept/Oct)
Burberry
This season, Burberry returns to its heritage with the iconic
Burberry check and logo and the key trend is graduated colour
frames in optical.
D & G
Movie sirens and starlets from the 1970s are referenced here with
tapered shapes and translucent styles that hark back to that bygone
era.
Dolce & Gabbana
Bold, refined and sophisticated details with geometric designs and
bright colourways make up this collection.
Prada
Prada is the essence of style and taste. This season we see acetate
frames in retro and cat's eye shapes that are bold in design.
Ralph Lauren
This design house sticks to its classic roots and offers modern
elegance.
Ray-Ban
The iconic label has reinterpreted its most celebrated models.
Ray-Bans are timeless and their designs transcend seasonal fads.
They define "cool".
There's a pair of specs out there that will suit everyone, so, go on, be adventurous!
See you next week!
