As we all know, Christmas is a time for getting together with your nearest and dearest - but let's be honest here - it's really all about giving and receiving presents.

If you are going to spend time and money on a present, it pays to do your homework and get something you know the person really wants.

You know you have got a winner when the gift receiver's eyes light up with pure joy and genuine excitement as opposed to feigned happiness. There is nothing worse then the played out response "Oh, what's this? Gosh, you shouldn't have" (with a look of pure horror) or the dreaded "Hmmm, how interesting... I'll have to save this one for later..."

This all translates into "God, it is so hideous! How could you get me something so horrendous, it's such an insult."

To save yourself from buying presents that are destined to remain in their wrapping paper hidden under the bed for the term of their natural life, the best thing to do is simply just ask and get a comprehensive list off everyone.

Beware: Unless you really know the person well, it's extremely hard to buy something for their wardrobe (especially for any fashionistas out there!)

Ask them exactly what they want though and you can't go wrong. (See what Style blog is hoping for this Christmas in our photogallery .)

Get the right style code, correct size and colour preference and you're away laughing.

Another good idea is to find out what their favourite stores are and get them a gift voucher.

Happy gift hunting!
