Sir Elton John and David Furnish have counselling to discuss the growth of their son Zachary.

The couple - who welcomed their first son on Christmas day 2010 - are concerned about him getting "doubly stigmatised" because of his unusual upbringing and have taken advice on how to deal with it when he gets older.

Furnish, 49, said: "We're going to raise him to be proud of who he is and understand that he came from a relationship that was taking the love we have for each other to a more dedicated and committed level.

"I think he's going to have a lot of attention thrust upon him. He's going to be potentially double stigmatised, because one of his parents is extremely famous and secondly because he comes from two dads.

"We've taken advice from counsellors. We've put a whole scrap book together about his creation and the people that were involved in the process and how the intent was about love."

Sir Elton, 64, believes having a child has been an "incredible" experience, especially as he never thought he would see his family grow.

The Rocket' Man singer feels as though he is at a stage in his life where he has so much to look forward to.

In a joint interview with Attitude magazine, he said: "We have had the most incredible year with him. I can't tell you how brilliant this year has been and how much love he's brought us and how much we're getting. We thought the civil partnership brought us together, but having a child has been magnificent and I never thought I would have a kid.

"I don't feel 65, which I will be next year. Now, having a kid, there's so much more to do.

There's so much more I want to see happen before I die."
