This week Style Blog spent Friday night on the couch. Tragic? I know right!
There isn't anything stylish about blobbing out like couch potatoes on a Friday night. However we did manage to catch Gok Wan's second series of Gok's Fashion Fix .
There was one element of the show that we at Style Blog connected with. Gok takes a member of the public that is struggling with an aspect of fashion - whether it be buying lots of cheap crap or spending a fortune on over the top designer tat - and does a huge cull of what they have (Trinny and Susannah style), creating a capsule wardrobe for the lucky lass.
After being glued to Gok for an hour we started to wonder: Does anyone out there know what a capsule wardrobe is?
A capsule wardrobe is nothing more than a collection of clothes that work well together, but can be worn in different ways to take you from day to night.
It's the sort of thing Paula Ryan prescribes to for holidaying in "style". Or what you might find being recommended to do whilst having your colours done via the scarf technique. Summer, winter, anyone?
A capsule wardrobe is great for someone with no idea about fashion yet still wants to appear to have a glimmer of taste and style.
They're a bit of a cliche, but we at Style Blog think if you are going to give it a go, the essentials are: Tailored trousers, great fitting jeans, leggings, a man's white shirt, t-shirts for layering, tank tops (black and white), snugly cardigans, a great coat, a neutral fitted jacket, a well-cut blazer, a little black dress, brown or black boots and impossibly high heels. You will need other accessories like fantastic bags, jewellery, scarves, hats and gloves.
The basis to any great capsule wardrobe, or any wardrobe in fact, should be classic items that transcend fashion trends. They are garments you should invest in wisely. Look for top quality fabrics and the most flattering cut that suits your body shape.
Always go for natural fabrics such as cotton, silk, rayon, wool and cashmere as opposed to cheap, hideous man-made synthetics such as polyester, etc...
Have staples in your wardrobe that are in good, neutral colours such as white, black, cream, charcoal, grey, tan/browns and navy. These neutral basics will easily work back with any coloured or patterned pieces you may have, and always remember not to take it too seriously. Fashion should be fun! Yeah right!
Here a few items we thought would work well in a capsule wardrobe, along with some great accessories.
