Perez Hilton has started a petition calling for the Muppets to perform a song written by an NZ entertainer at the Oscars.
For the 84th Academy Awards the nominees for the Best Original Song category will not be allowed to perform their nominated song.
In an online petition the American celebrity blogger is urging the Academy to allow the song, Man or Muppet, to be sung at the event.
The post on perezhilton.com states: "Since The Muppets have brought so much joy to the hearts of cinema enthusiasts everywhere for decades, we are OUTRAGED they won't have their chance to perform Man or Muppet!"
Man or Muppet was written by Kiwi Bret McKenzie, half of the Flight of the Conchords comedy rock duo.
McKenzie has previously nominated at both the Emmys and Grammys for his work on the HBO series Flight of the Conchords, but this is his first major nomination for solo songwriting.
The second nominee for Best Original Song is Real in Rio, from the movie RIO, composed by Sergio Mendes and Carlinhos Brown.
Perez Hilton's petition has a signature goal of 100,000, and since being posted yesterday it has gathered more than 6000 signatures.
