Online streaming to feature in NZ music charts

Published: 7:38PM Tuesday June 24, 2014 Source: ONE News

The way that New Zealand's most popular songs are ranked will soon be getting a shake-up with online streaming due to become part of the equation.

Currently, the country's Top 40 Chart is based on sales numbers but the growing number of songs being heard via the internet and is prompting us to factor modern technology into the official countdown.

Recorded Music CEO Damien Vaughan says that streaming revenue for our local industry has gone up 300% in the past year and is a sign of how quickly streaming services are becoming a part of listener's lives.

Mike Chunn, a former member of iconic Kiwi band Split Enz, believes the new technology will help more artists to break into the industry.

"Split Enz today would have had much more chance of breaking through out of New Zealand. We had to go to Australia to get a deal to make an album," he says.

Britain is already factoring streaming into its official countdown and uses a ratio of one hundred free streams to one sale when determining a song's popularity.

The charts will reflect the change by the end of the year.
