One Direction's single Live While We're Young has become the fastest selling single by a British artist in the United States.

The boyband sold more than 341,000 copies of the track in its first week on sale in the US - the biggest ever opening week by a non-American artist.

It entered the US Digital Tracks and Digital Songs Chart at No. 1.

Singer Niall Horan, 19, said: "We're so happy with the success of the single in the USA and can't wait for everyone to hear our new album.

"Thank you to all the fans once again!"

Live While We're Young is the first single to be taken from One Direction's upcoming second album Take Me Home, which is set to be released on November 9 in New Zealand.

Their debut album, Up All Night was the first by a UK act to debut at number one on the US Billboard 200 all-genre albums chart.

The band also picked up two early awards at the MTV Video Music Awards last month.

Horan and fellow bandmates Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik all entered The X Factor competition as solo singers in 2010 but were formed into a group by the judging panel.

Despite coming third in the show, they have gone on to make more than 100 million pounds ($196 million).
