A score of ageing musicians are ruling the Kiwi music charts in the run-up to Christmas.

Vera Lynn is a chart darling at number 10 on the top 40, and age has not wearied this grand musical dame.

At 91, she's the oldest on the charts but she is in mature company.

"It's that whole thing, nostalgia echoes of better times," says Dave Dobbyn.

Michael Jackson, veteran rocker Rod Stewart and 70s icons Fleetwood Mac are all well up the top 20.

Dobbyn says it is a combination of groove and melody.

"They just sound like the perfect American band really."

The unlikely phenomenon that is Susan Boyle reigns supreme at number one.

"If you can make people cry it's very sellable," says Dobbyn.

DJ Jason Reeves has a theory on the new old favourites.

"People are going out buying things for mums and dads because Rod Stewart's on the list, even the Susan Boyles - I don't know if many mums and dads are going to download that sort of stuff," he says.
