NZGT judges' choices surprise Tamati Coffey

New Zealand's Got Talent host Tamati Coffey says he was somewhat surprised when the show's judges put through a pole dancer, pianist and pipe flutist to the next round of auditions on the show.

Coffey admitted that talent showcased on this week's programme was a bit of a mixed bag, and although he would be surprised if the likes of pole dancer Karry Summers, 28, go on to win the show, it is these "wow moments" which people would remember.

Following on from a previous impromptu dance performance on the first episode of the TV ONE show, Coffey had a quick attempt at copying Summers' expert technique, purely for the audience's amusement.

"Pole dancers, like Karry Summers, have lots of upper body strength and flexibility. All you can do is look at her, marvel, and say 'wow'," he said.

Similarly, Coffey thought that singer Lili Latham, 24, who sang David Guetta's Getting Over You, was the highlight of the show.

"I just thought she was amazing. Lili's got this amazing stage presence and voice and I could imagine her at an outdoor concert just rocking a huge big crowd," he said.

Yet Coffey was quite surprised over the rave reviews singer-pianist William Fairbairn, 15, received for his version of Jerry Lee Lewis' Great Balls of Fire.

"He was super confident, but I didn't think he was great. Yet for some reason he wowed the crowd and so many people were tweeting about his performance."

Coffey told onenews.co.nz that during this week's show the acts he found most interesting and original were Ji-Ye's comedy act, and Sopi Jensen's fire dancing routine.

In particular, Coffey said that he appreciated how Ji-Ye, a 24-year-old student, "could laugh at herself".

"It's a hard one, because she was making fun of culture and her own experience," Coffey said of Ji-Ye's original song 'Ching Chong'.

"I remember giving her an extra good luck before her performance, because comedy can go so badly.

"But she stood before an audience of 2000 people and made them laugh, and was one of the few acts to receive a standing ovation."

Coffey also revealed that during Jensen's fire routine, the dancer burnt one of his own eyebrows.

"Although the audience didn't see his burns or eyebrows, he told me that it happens all of the time, and he is mostly used to it."

Coffey also said that he wanted to remind viewers that when the semi-finals begin in a few weeks, it will be them who decides who gets to go on to the next round.
