Australian actress Nicole Kidman is so keen to star in a film adaptation of a novel about an English widow and a young African asylum seeker she is vying for rights to the book, a British newspaper reported.
The Other Hand, by little-known London author Chris Cleave, sold just 3,000 copies when it came out in hardback last year.
But in the past two months, 100,000 copies have been sold in Britain alone as readers spread the word about the story of Little Bee, a 14-year-old Nigerian girl who goes to the UK in search of a middle-class woman called Sarah.
According to the Sunday Times, Kidman wants to star as Sarah after reading the novel on a recent flight between Los Angeles and Australia.
"The actress is so eager to play the role of Sarah that she is competing with several film studios to secure the rights to the book," the newspaper said.
