The producers of hit TV series Band of Brothers are about to launch a similar series based around the Pacific theatre of World War II.

They are hoping the new ten-part series, focussing on three marines, will do for the Pacific battle what Band of Brothers has done for US soldiers in Europe.

The series is based on memoirs, news reports, and original interviews conducted by the filmmakers, and makes no apology for its brutality.

"We did try to make it to honour these men's stories, but also make it as realistic as we could. It was an especially brutal conflict and we didn't want to shy away from that," says actor James Badge Dale.

The series producers' dedication to realism saw actors attend a ten-day boot camp in the jungle to get into character.

"They beat us down, and maybe actors are sensitive people and we break earlier than the rest... [But] the men in the Pacific were broken mentally, physically, and spiritually, and the main idea of this boot camp was to give us a taste of that," says Dale

Real weapons were used while filming the series, whose producers include Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks.
