It's been a while since we've had a supergroup to fuss over.

Gone are the days of my parent's generation when it seemed that every second group was of the super variety.

With rock writers starved of something to genuinely salivate over the entrance of Them Crooked Vultures is perfectly timed.

Them Crooked Vultures, or TCV if you are cool (or a lazy) writer, consists of Dave Grohl - the one man superband of Nirvana and Foo Fighters fame - on drums, Queens of the Stone Age vocalist and guitarist Josh Homme and to round it off we have a bassist and keyboardist by the name of John Paul Jones formally of Led Zeppelin.

You may have heard of them before.

With these unique musical directions coming together on one project my first thought was, whose sound is going to be reflected the most. The answer is not clear

If I was forced to pick one I would say that the Queens of the Stone Age influence is the most apparent. However, this is not a copy of the work of QOTSA, nor is it typical of their body of work.

It is more a natural progression with Grohl and Homme coming together with Grohl working with the Stone Age lads and pushing some good ideas forward onto a unique project of its own.

The key to the success of Them Crooked Vultures is this experimental nature.

In these times of highly contrived acts and songs made with radio airplay in mind, TCV have taken us back to a time when bands jammed on for as long as they liked without commercial gains in mind.

Yet they have done so in such a forward thinking fashion that the band could never be considered as a throw back to anything. The influence of Jones is also apparent and this is a future classic in the making. At times I feel like I am listening to rock and roll for the first time again.

If you like music that in involves a guitar or a drum kit, you need this album, but be prepared to hear them used in ways you have never heard them used before.

Them Crooked Vultures you are the first band to receive a 10/10 from me, I hope you enjoy it.
