The MTV Europe Music Awards take place in Berlin on Thursday (Friday NZT).
Irish rockers U2 will play an open-air concert in the city to coincide with the annual event, which is one of pop music's biggest nights outside of the United States.
It is being held in the German capital to mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, a symbol of the Cold War that split the city and Germany.
Despite its name, US acts continue to dominate the nominations for awards.
