One way of feeling confident in a sport is at least looking the part. Sure, actually knowing what you are doing is certainly important but looking good while you are doing it (in Style Blog's world at least) always takes precedence!
Now that we are in the midst of a very frozen winter, it's time to embrace the cold and head for the mountains to hit the slopes!
Do be prepared before you go:
1) Be sure to book in some lessons before you are "sur la piste" (on the slopes) so to avoid the embarrassing "floundering around in the snow and looking like a complete loser" scenario that has sadly been the case of many a first time skier or snowboarder.
2) Buy your own gear so you can at least look cool. There is nothing worse than having to hire uber naff ski outfits that hark back from the 80's and then have to spend all day being seen by around hundreds of people in them!
3) Make sure that what you have on underneath is nice and warm as it can get bone-numbingly cold extremely suddenly on a mountain.
Kathmandu is great for basic, warm thermals and even better, they always seem to be having amazing sales.
Glassons also do cheap and cheerfully priced 100% merinos or opt for more luxurious cashmere staples from Standard Issue that will keep you toasty and warm.
The trick is keep it fine underneath and not bulky to stop yourself from morphing into the dreaded "Michelin Man"
4) If it's not waterproof forget it. We all know that snow becomes ice which turns into water. You want to remain as dry as possible. Make sure what you wear protects you whilst looking hot at the same time of course!
What you need:
The jacket
You don't have to pay a fortune to look good. Sure, if you have the
bank balance to channel Posh Spice's skiing look "dans les Alpes",
resplendently head-to-toe Chanel, go for it! Those of us living in
the real world can look just as good in cheaper options available
from all good skiwear retailers.
Ripcurl, O'Neill, Quicksilver and Billabong all do great jackets that are modern in design and fully functional.
Since we work in Fashion, naturellement, we love black! However, if you really want to stand out from the crowd, go for bright block colours paired back with white.
Faux-fur trimmed jackets are still popular and wonderfully warm.
As for snowboarders, they tend to love the wacky, graphic patterns and acid colours.
The pants
Veer away from super baggy and opt for slimmer-cut pants. You still
need to have some room in them to move though and be able to fall
down in them without ripping them up the backside.Quel Horreur!
Also, styles with many zips and pockets are best.
The sunnies or Goggles
Sunglasses are imperative on the slopes to stop you from going
blind and of course for looking cool!
For goggles, check out the ones by Oakley, Electric and Von Zipper. Maybe you can splash out on a Chanel version here?
Gloves and scarves
A necessity to protect from frost bite and this is where you can
add a bit of pattern or colour to your overall look.
The hat or helmet
Functional for keeping your head warm and saving your life! Choose
one that suits you and fits perfectly.
The gear
The most important things to so the sport are of course having good
boots, skis or snowboards that fit and ski-poles.

Of course, the best part of the day is the "après-ski"
relaxing beside the roaring fire, sipping on delicious mulled wine
and nibbling on a good cheese fondue!
C'est bon nest pas?
Happy skiing and see you all next week!
