American rock band 30 Seconds to Mars took a novel approach to publicity ahead of its sold-out concert tonight in Auckland.

It held a press conference at Auckland's Epsom Girls High School today, and faced a barrage of questions from excited young fans.

The school won a radio competition to host the event, giving the girls an opportunity to ask the band about such important subjects as... girlfriends and their schooldays.

Lead singer Jared Leto took it all in his stride.

The former actor said there was no time for girlfriends with the band's busy schedule and instead he is "married to the band".

Discussing his school days, Leto admitted he "never really showed up" and his bandmates were "nerds" and "bad boys" at school.

Leto first found fame starring opposite Brad Pitt in Fight Club and Jodie Foster in Panic Room.

But he's not that keen on discussing his thespian past, although concedes there are upsides to having both an acting and music career.

"They both are amazing things to do. It's kind of like ice climbing or white water rafting," he said.

The band's third and latest album is called This is War.
