Madonna was carried to the stage on a golden throne for her performance at the Super Bowl yesterday.

The singer performed at the Super Bowl XLVI Half Time Show, and was held aloft by a group of Egyptian styled soldiers in black and gold armour.

She performed a 10 minute career-spanning set at Indianapolis' Lucas Oil Stadium, which included Vogue, Like a Prayer, her new single Gimme all your Luvin and Music.

Madonna took to the stage in a black Givenchy dress, a Roman-inspired skirt, a short cape and an elaborate golden headpiece.

The singer was joined by a host of guest stars during the performance including Nicki Minaj, LMFAO, Cee Lo Green and M.I.A. - who caused controversy by flipping her middle finger at the camera during her spot.

Referring to the incident, a spokesperson for NBC sports said: "We apologise for the inappropriate gesture that aired during halftime. It was a spontaneous gesture that our delay system caught late."

The end of Music saw Madonna joined by duo LMFAO, who were also dressed in suits of armour and zebra skin accessories. They performed snippets of their tracks Party Rock Anthem and Sexy and I Know it.

Third track Give Me All Your Luvin saw Nicki and M.I.A. join the Material Girl singer on stage, with them all shaking gold pom poms like cheerleaders as they performed.

The set ended with Like a Prayer on which Madonna was joined by Cee Lo Green, and a huge backing choir. The spot ended with Madonna disappearing under the stage with the words World Peace written on the large screen floor.

Madonna had to overcome a hamstring injury to perform the show, after hurting her leg and knocking her nose in rehearsals.

She said before her performance: "My nose is healed. I'm OK. Lots of warmups and tapings and ultrasounds.

"I feel like I'm one of the football players right now with all the physical therapy I had to do. Mind over matter."
