Susan Sarandon greeted fans and offered wise words on ageing gracefully as she walked the red carpet for the Australian premiere of The Lovely Bones.

The 63-year-old Hollywood star dazzled in a cerise Diane von Furstenberg dress with a plunging neckline and flat gold shoes.

Sarandon plays a grandmother in the Peter Jackson-directed film based on the best-selling novel by Alice Sebold about a young girl who is murdered and watches over her family from heaven.

It's Sarandon's first role playing a grandmother, but she was comfortable in the part, she said.

"I didn't register it as being that big a deal, and she's such a strange grandmother. She's not a granny grandmother, and I'm old enough to be a grandmother," she said.

The movie opens in Australia and New Zealand on December 26.
