Winter truly arrived this week as we all grudgingly put another layer on thanks to the icy blasts we received from the deep south.

The swaddling-up effect unfortunately makes many of us look like the Michelin man, which is never a good look! The key is to layer up wisely using thin knits as a base.

Standard Issue do great basics in the softest cashmeres and wools that feel luxe against the body and yet are oh so toasty! For a more affordable look, the House of G (a.k.a Glassons) always does a great merino knit!

You can even keep wearing some of your fave summer dresses but pop a black, fitted, long-sleeved merino top underneath, add some thick, black opaque tights and some great boots and voila, you have a winter look without having to break the bank!

Another way to keep warm and still look good is to wrap up with some scarves. Layer a few fine knit scarves or go for a chunkier knit.

Style Blog loves ours from Nom D , Standard Issue and Country Road

Looking ahead

As the winter woollies start coming out in full force, it seems mad to even think about Summer! But, as fashion always has to be 6 months ahead, the Style Blog team has been attending showings of local designers Summer 2010 collections!

At a recent Spring/Summer  media showing by PR company, Showroom 22, Style Blog was impressed by the interesting tailoring and intelligently designed jackets and coats featured in Alexandra Owen's collection.

Another one to look out for is the up and coming label, TwentySeven Names designed by Rachel Easing & Anjali Stewart. The label has been going for two years and was formerly called Lovesliesbbleeding.

Style Blog loves the current winter collection "Crazy Horse" which is very rock n roll - channelling Patti Smith with super cool long line blazers and other rock goddess looks.

TwentySeven Names is available at Carlson boutique in Auckland.

The summer collection will also be one to look forward to and Style Blog already has their eyes on the gorgeous 'flowers in the attic' dress that was oh so tasteful.

Unfortunately 'tasteful' was a theme that was lacking in some of the look book styling.

That being said we love, love, love the collection and when you are snapped by The Sartorialist a.k.a Scott Schuman wearing your own label (as Rachel Easing was recently in Sydney) you know that you have something special going on!

Artistic cosmetics
Speaking of cool, Style Blog went along to a great Mac cosmetics event this week where the theme was "Op Art"

"Op Art" or "Optical Art" was a huge visual art movement back in the late 1960's, early 1970's where optical illusions were created, usually done in black & white and tricking the eye by using pattern and line, creating a feeling of swelling & movement.

The incredibly talented team at Mac cosmetics painstakingly painted several models from head to toe in black & white paint with "Op Art" designs and placed the models in a mirrored glass installation.

The models were the living and breathing art and they looked amazing! Hats off to them for being so great i.e stoically posing for hours in a cold room, completely naked and unable to move!

Style blog loves the ol' sock down paper G string trick featuring on some of the male models - HILARIOUS!!

We love Gok!
Finally, the highlight of the week was meeting British celebrity stylist, Gok Wan from Gok's Fashion Fix TV One Fridays at 7:30pm.

Gok's been in Auckland promoting Specsavers spectacles and also his book How to Dress: Your Complete Style Guide for Every Occasion. We were lucky enough to meet him as he was at TVNZ being interviewed for Close Up and also making an appearance on Breakfast (where he revealed a crush on Tamati).

We were blown away by Gok's charm, witty good humour and his infectious, vivacious personality. Gok is truly a lovely guy and he is just so genuine which is really refreshing!

In the UK, Gok is known as TV's Mr Nice Guy (i.e the polar opposite of American Idol's Simon Cowell!)

Gok started off his early teenage years as a bullied, obese teenager who then lost copious amounts of weight and then on, his career went from strength to strength.

After studying drama and speech and then working as a hair and make up artist, Gok then became a stylist and fashion consultant.

Gok's own experience with his previous body issues enable him to fully understand other people's own body hang ups, how to work with what you have and downplay the bits you aren't too fond of.

Gok's show How To Look Good Naked" was a huge success all over the world as he showed women how to look their best regardless of age and weight.

We hope Gok can come back to the land of the long white cloud again because we love him!!!
