Despite rain, music lovers are flooding central Auckland as the
Laneway music festival heats up.
The show concept began in Melbourne and is an annual sell-out in
Australia. The first ever festival for New Zealand is attracting
equally big crowds.
A sell-out crowd of 5,000 will see both international and local
acts.
"(Laneway's) definitely indie or alternative, with independent artists, sort of non-mainstream and non-commercial acts," says Laneway Festival organiser, Ben Howe.
Laneway's New Zealand debut is nestled between skyscrapers and apartment buildings in Auckland's Britomart Square.
"Its an urban event really, it's about bringing people into the city. You don't have to travel and take a tent and all of that, you just hop on a bus and you're here," says Howe.
Organisers expect an older generation of music lovers to join the party on Monday night as bands like Echo and the Bunnymen take to the stage.
It will also be the first chance for fans to see local artist Chris Knox since his stroke eight months ago, when he sings at the festival on Monday night.
And Dunedin band The 3Ds are looking forward to catching up with old fans.
"I guess we're really looking forward to playing with people we haven't played with in 10 years, playing to fans that haven't seen us in a long time. It'll be quite rough and ready but a lot of fun," says 3Ds frontman, David Saunders.
