The parents of Katie Holmes are "glad to have their daughter back", according to an insider.
Martin and Kathleen Holmes were apparently against their youngest child marrying actor Tom Cruise, and are relieved the two have parted ways.
The pair were wed in a lavish Scientology ceremony at an Italian castle in November 2006, after an 18-month courtship that was followed religiously by the tabloids.
Now the actress has filed documents to divorce Cruise based on "irreconcilable differences".
"Obviously, Martin and Kathleen are sad that Katie is having to go through all this emotional turmoil and that she is going to be a single parent," a source told website RadarOnline.
"It's been tough for them over the past five years to watch Katie be controlled by Tom and they really felt that they had lost their daughter to some extent."
It has been reported that the Dawson's Creek actress felt she was "turning into a robot" while with Cruise.
A friend of the actress said that she used to be "spunky and feisty" but after marrying the mega-star she slowly became "downtrodden and insipid".
"In the end it just got too much, she was sick of it and decided she had to do something. Basically, she grew up and lost the starstruck goggles she had been wearing," they said.
Holmes is reportedly seeking sole legal custody of the couple's six-year-old daughter Suri.
She has also asked for legal custody, primary residential custody and a "suitable amount" of child support from her husband, TMZ.com reports.
In addition she has asked for the division of their property, although no mention of their pre-nuptial agreement is mentioned in the documents.
Cruise caught unaware
Cruise - who is currently in Iceland filming new action movie Oblivion - is believed to have "not seen" the divorce documents coming.
The 49-year-old actor - who already has children Connor, 17 and Isabella, 19 from his relationship with Australian beauty Nicole Kidman.
This will be Cruise's third failed marriage following splits from Kidman and fellow Hollywood star Mimi Rogers.
Cruise is "deeply saddened" to be splitting from Holmes.
He confirmed he is upset about the demise of his five year marriage but is focusing on his children.
His representative said in a statement: "Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy."
