He is a band leader, television presenter, author and occasional film star. But first and foremost Jools Holland is a musician.
The British jazz musician caught up with ONE News for an impromptu jam session in Auckland on Monday, ahead of his Tuesday night show at the Aotea Centre.
Holland and British soul singer Ruby Turner have arrived in town complete with Holland's 18-piece rhythm and blues orchestra.
It is an awfully long way for a day trip but one that Holland was only too happy to make.
" My one regret is that I couldn't have come (to New Zealand) for longer. I wanted to come here at the beginning of my tour so I could have had two weeks and had a little look around. It is so beautiful here. I feel cheated," the musician says.
Being the long-time host of the BBC's music chat show Later... With Jools Holland, the band leader has met just about every performing artist around - although he is not willing to pick a favourite.
"Each person does their own music. I mean that's the great thing about music. Everyone has their own sound, their own individual thing that they make, that's the key to music. You've got to play what you love and love what you play.
"And as you get more into it, you have to play what you mean and mean what you play. That's what all the people on the show have reached."
