This 30 second clip is all I have to verify the following story.
Of course it's sod's law that the cameras weren't actually rolling during this exchange so you'll just have to take my word for it.
I should also point out, there's no way to tell this story without making myself sound like, well, a bit of a dick. But really, it's too good to let pass unnoticed.
The background to this story begins many years ago, in a bathroom. (Glamourous, I know&)
I was about 18 at the time, preening myself in the mirror of some drunken establishment, when I noticed someone staring at me.
"You look like that actress" she said enthusiastically. "That blonde one."
Ah, well that narrows the field.
"Er, thanks," I replied.
"You do. You know the one& Reese. Reese Witherspoon."
This was the first time anyone had ever compared me to the starlet. But it wouldn't be the last.
Over the past ten years, I've probably had the comparison at least once a month. Reese& and Michelle Pfeiffer (this is the bit where I sound like a dick. More to come on that though.)
Personally, I don't see the resemblance. But of course I'm happy to take the compliment.
Three weeks ago, I signed on to interview Reese in Sydney (if you didn't catch the interview on Breakfast this morning, you can watch it here) and ever since, the comparisons have rolled in thick and fast.
In fact, when I tell people I'm off to interview her, the standard response is, "Oh, you look a bit like her".
Again, hugely flattering. But not really true.
So imagine my consternation/utter bewilderment when I walked into my interview on Friday, sat down opposite Reese and the following conversation ensued.
Reese [with one eyebrow cocked in that signature Witherspoon way]: Do people ever tell you, you look like someone?
Me [totally unsure where this is going]: Er, sometimes&.
Reese: Do they think you look like an actress?
Me [still unsure]: Er, sometimes.
Reese: Who do they say you look like?
Me: Well, Reese, actually I get told I look like you.
Reese: You do, huh!
Me [figuring I may as well go for broke]: I also get Michelle Pfeiffer quite a lot.
Reese: Oh that's good! She's gorgeous.
Me: Yeah, I think it's just the blonde hair but, you know, it's an absolute compliment.
Reese: It's a big compliment. I feel very complimented.
At this point, the cameraman called "rolling" and we began the interview in earnest. Reese switched back into professional mode and no more was said on the matter.
But from now on, if anyone brings up my celebrity doppelganger, I shall own it.
Yes, I do look like Reese. She said so herself.
