The moment of truth is nigh.

Tonight, I'm going to see Sex And The City 2 - and I cannot wait.

This is a recent development. Until about three days ago I was completely ambivalent to the film's release.

As a teenager, I loved the smart, sassy ladies. They were confident and independent - and something to aspire to.

But as I got older - and they got even older - their appeal began to wane.

I began to see Carrie not as a witty, insightful dramatist, but rather a neurotic, whining flake.

When the ladies made their big screen debut two years ago, I didn't see the film. It wasn't a deliberate boycott - it just seemed to pass me by.

Some friends had planned to see it together but we never quite got around to it.

I eventually saw it on a flight to London (hardly the ideal viewing conditions) and to be fair - I didn't mind the film. It was light, fluffy viewing that made me laugh a little - and the sartorial eye candy was as fabulous as ever.

As a stand alone piece of entertainment, it was passable. It wasn't life altering in any way, shape or form - but how many films are?

As a continuation of the series, however, it was pointless. It didn't answer any burning questions from the original run - they were all tied up in the grand Parisian finale (and let's be honest, they were hardly burning. More of a mild simmer...)

If there was little to no need for the first feature instalment, the concept certainly doesn't justify a sequel.

At least, not from a viewer's perspective. Obviously, the millions of dollars of revenue from a sequel is a pretty big justification for the producers.

So as the camel-trotting trailers have been rolled out, along with the glittering billboards and star-studded premieres, my interest has been muted.

I knew I would have to see the film (it's my job after all) but it wasn't the highlight of the viewing calendar. Until this past weekend, when I read my first scathing review of the sequel. Since then, the vitriol has flowed freely - a torrent of caustic prose.

Even reviewers known for their mild-mannered critiques have dusted off their daggers to savage the film.

It makes for the most entertaining reading I've seen in years.

Clearly, I'm not alone in this view as Facebook and Twitter are full of users posting and re-posting their favourite script.

If even half the reviews are to be believed, Sex And The City 2 could well be one of the worst films ever made.

It hasn't done nearly as well as expected at the US box office - coming in third place this weekend behind Shrek Forever After and Prince Of Persia.

Some are blaming the reviews. But quite honestly, they have only piqued my interest. I need to see this for myself.

There are three camps of people in the world: Those who never liked Sex And The City; those who liked the TV show but not the films; and those who will follow it anywhere blindly.

The first group were never going to see the film. The last, were always going to. But those in the middle - like myself - might just have been persuaded to give it a look.

After all, it's the first commandment of Hollywood: All publicity is good publicity.

Have the reviews piqued your interest? Will you be going to see Sex And The City or have you been put off by the negative publicity? Share your thoughts on the messageboard below.
