Katie Holmes has reportedly been approached to take on the role of a feisty New York businesswoman who infuriates Kim Cattrall's man-eating character Samantha Jones in the new Sex and the City movie.

A source says the character they want her to play is a really ballsy, high-powered company executive who tangles with Samantha.

Movie bosses are currently working on the follow-up to the 2008 hit Sex and the City: The Movie - which was based on the long-running TV series about four female friends and their chaotic love lives.

Holmes has taken on less major film roles since giving birth to daughter Suri, now two, to focus on raising her child with husband Tom Cruise.

If she accepts the part, the 30-year-old actress will start shooting with the movie's other stars - Catrall, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon - soon in readiness for a May 2010 release.

Holmes is currently on location in Australia shooting 'Don't Be Afraid of the Dark'.
