Guillermo del Toro, director of hit films like Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth to name a few, is in New Zealand to film his latest movie The Hobbit.
But on Wednesday, many queued up in Wellington to see the man, though not because of his movies. Rather, it was to get him to autograph their copies of a novel written by the highly-acclaimed Mexican director himself.
He took a little time out from filming, to autograph his first book in a vampire trilogy titled The Strain.
Del Toro says there are moments of horror in the book that are more intense than anything he has ever filmed.
"People say 'we stayed up all night' or 'damn you fat man, we couldn't sleep'," says del Toro, when asked if the book was a good night read.
A novel shouldn't come as a surprise for those who know the director. Guillermo is so obsessed with reading he bought a house in Los Angeles just for his books.
He says the house is organised in libraries, six of them, and it's all in honour of reading.
The Strain has had mixed reviews, with one criticising the novel for reading like a screenplay.
But if that screenplay is anything like the ones from his critically acclaimed films, that apparently can't be a bad thing.
