So it's time for the actual show and the awards to be handed out....

But first a moment of reflection on the red carpet shenanigans which have just passed...my colleague Anna did a great job on her blog - take a look here.

Now though it's my turn - tvnz.co.nz's movie reviewer Darren Bevan.  As well as having to watch movies, I get to be part of the team who deals with all the TV shows for tvnz.co.nz  on TV ONE and TV2 online - seriously, how can I ever complain at the job?

I've been watching the Red Carpet and it seems to be a lot of the old names and familiar shows - as well as just about everyone from Glee...although I think one of the highlights will be George Clooney getting an award for his humanitarian work from old ER co worker Julianna Margulies. Mind you I am hoping that Glee won't sweep the board - nothing against the show but from a watching point of view it gets a little boring; it'd be great to see Modern Family take something and I'd also love to see some love for the final series of Lost.

2.59pm: And that's a wrap - according to Jimmy Fallon though there's an after party at Betty White's house - see you there?

2.56pm: And so the final award of the night is here in the Nokia Theatre. On stage to present it is Ted Danson who heads on to the Cheers theme. The Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series goes to Modern Family . Hoorah. Writer Steven Levitan heads to the stage with the cast to get the award and is stunned - "This is such an honour for us and it means so much." The cast gets a thanking again and the writing staff also get a mention for the team work which goes in. He suddenly remembers to thank his kids and his mum.

2.53pm: With one award to go - the Emmy for Comedy Series - they take an ad break. Will it be Glee? Will it be Modern Family? Or Curb Your Enthusiasm? Or Nurse Jackie? Or 30 Rock? Or The Office? I'm hoping Modern Family.

2.49pm: The last two awards - Emmy for the Drama Series is next - with Tom Selleck (Jimmy Fallon's real father he says) presenting the award for drama series - Tom underplays Jimmy Fallon's hug with a dismissive "OK" The winner of the 2010 Emmy for Outstanding Drama series goes to Mad Men. For the third year in a row....apparently I'm not allowed to say that Lost was treated unfairly and that I have to get over it. Matthew Weiner from the team thanks the three thousand people currently on the stage - saying they "never thought they'd get through half a season - let alone a fourth one."

2.45pm: We're back from an ad - and here's Laurence Fishburne to present the Emmy for the Outstanding Mini Series - with the Pacific picking up the Emmy. 24 nominations for this show - Tom Hanks accepts the award for Spielberg who's shooting in the UK. Hanks pays tribute to the "network for making it happen and the cast of actors who themselves went through a brand of hell across the Pacific." It's a very brief speech for Hanks - because the Emmy for Made for Television Movie is up - the winner of that is Temple Grandin, a biopic about autism.  One of the acceptees gives Temple a big hug and nearly loses it completely - finally some real emotion on the stage tonight. There's hugs and smiles - that's how it should be - within a limit of course.

2.43pm: As we head towards the end, I have to say it's been a very uneventful Emmy Awards - not exactly flat but not exactly the fun riot that host Jimmy Fallon was promising. But you know, at least I'm aware that Jimmy Fallon can sing - and sing some more. And a bit more.

2.38pm: Al Pacino has very high hair as he stands on stage and pays tribute to someone as "brilliant and unique as Jack Kevorkian" - this film got 16 Emmy nominations and is doing well - director Barry Levinson (Good Morning, Vietnam) gets told "I wouldn't be here without you" by Al - he seems a little out of sorts to be honest - a stuttering speech which is a little all over the place. His final words are :"You're all right Jack" before thanking his family, friends for their support. Everyone's been given a thanks. Anna Paquin walks off with new hubbie Stephen - and seems to be refusing to leave his side; ahh ain't love grand? See how I avoided the vampire puns there - Emmy writers take note.

2.34pm - "These next presenters really suck" Yep it's the lamest True Blood pun I've heard. Anna, Stephen and Alexander are on stage - "It's now our bloody thrill to present the Emmy for Miniseries, Movie Directing" The award goes to Mick Jackson for Temple Grandin.  Mick comes to the stage and says that "Temple made it so easy by making the film like you - spunky, easy, smart and never over sentimental." Clearly this film is one of the big winners for the evening in the Nokia Theatre.  The TB trio stay on to present nominees for outstanding actor in a mini series or TV Movie - the award goes to Al Pacino of You Don't Know Jack.  Hoo-ha. (Are people still doing that to Al?)

2.34pm: We're heading to the big one - Comedy series - will it be Glee? Will it be Modern Family? Or Curb Your Enthusiasm? Or Nurse Jackie? Or 30 Rock? Or The Office? Time will tell...

2.30pm: It's apparently nearly time for Anna, Stephen and Alexander aka The True Blood trio. Their song had better be good. (Disclaimer - I have no idea if they're singing)

2.25pm: It's into the final stages of the show now and Jewel's Shape of You song gets a polite ripple of applause - before Maura Tierney and Blair Underwood head to the stage - they're here to present the Emmy for the Outstanding Writing for a mini series or Movie - including 2 nods for The Pacific. The  Emmy for the Outstanding Writing for a mini series or Movie goes to Adam Mazer for You Don't Know Jack, his first win and nomination. He tells his kids they have 37 seconds before they can change the channel to the Disney channel. It's a film about Jack Kevorkian - Adam says he's "glad Jack is his friend  but not my doctor." And then he dedicates the award to his mother.  Maura Tierney from ER looks a little like Anna from V - they present the award to Claire Danes as the winner of the Emmy for Actress in a mini series or TV Movie - her second nomination and first win. She gives a heartfelt thanks to HBO the network for believing in the movie Temple Grandin - Claire thanks Temple saying "she's the most brave person she knows and this award is in service of her work."

2.21pm: And so we fade to an ad break and a moment's reflection.

2.14pm: Claire Danes heads to the stage looking all sparkly and classy - she's here to present the Emmy for Outstanding supporting actor in a miniseries or movie - the winner is David Strathairn. He heads to the stage looking a little puzzled and dedicates the award to "teachers" who've made a difference through the years. Temple Grandin was the movie/ mini-series and she's here to celebrate too. This segue ways in to the lovely Jewel who's here to sing a song for a friend who recently died from cancer.  And it's here we have the annual montage of those who've died and passed on from the world of television. Including Peter Graves of Mission Impossible fame, Brittany Murphy, Lynn Redgrave, Dennis Hopper, Maury Chaykin, Corey Haim, Edward Woodward, Gary Coleman, The voice of Charlie from Charlies Angels, Rue McClanahan from Golden Girls - it's quite a long list of those who've gone. In Memoriam to all of them.

2.05pm : It's the Supporting Actress Emmy for the Miniseries and Movie next. To present the award January Jones from Mad Men and John Krasinski from the Office - the winner of Supporting Actress Emmy for the Miniseries and Movie is Julia Ormond. She told her mum she was emminated for a Nommy - a minor laugh - and she talks of how good her fellow nominees are and for the mini series she was in. But she says "Claire Danes is a most phenomenal talent" - she's come a long way since My So Called Life.

1.58pm: A bigwig from the Emmy awards board - I missed his name - although he does look like UK comedienne Victoria Wood's husband. He's here to intro the Bob Hope award for George Clooney - and it's nurse Hathaway who gets to do the honours, with a montage of shots of George in the background and concentrating on his work for various good causes. "Time and time again, Clooney has used the power of TV to raise money where it's needed most" Julianna says - get ready for the standing ovation for Swooney Clooney. And it comes and Clooney's reaction is "Don't do that because maybe I'm sick and I don't know it - and maybe you do". He begins by talking about how Bob Hope and his wife inspired him - and with a bit of self deprecation Clooney says "there are some of you in the room who are not like that." Clooney is talking about the long term of effects of helping and how after the stories have gone, and "how they all fail after the fact and long after the cameras go away." And with that he walks off - it's a slightly odd moment - broken up by Jimmy Fallon's back with the guitar to serenade Tom Hanks for a possible Pacific win.

1;56pm: We're still waiting for the cast of True Blood to show up - and of course some of the top awards to be given out including Drama Series. But once again, there's another break... It will be interesting to see how normally humbled George Clooney feels about being given the Bob Hope Humanitarian award - but I'm guessing he's had some time to come around to the idea of the accolade.

1.45pm: "I used to think this next guy was a fat rude loud mouthed Brit - but now he's lost some weight." Jimmy Fallon intros Ricky Gervais, who promises to "keep it clean and is keeping the offensive stuff for the Golden Globes." He promises to not have a go at "Mel Gibson who's gone through a lot - but not as much as the Jews" Cue riotous laughter. He's here to present the Award for the oustanding director of a music, comedy or award show - the winner is Bucky Gunts. (for the Winter Olympics)  Ricky has a lot of fun with that name. You can really rely on him to bring a little of the scandal to the show really can't you? Ricky stays on to give an award for the outstanding Emmy for Variety, Comedy or Music Series - the winner is The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.  It's the seventh win for the show and Jon Stewart couldn't make it - what a shame. And also that Conan O'Brien didn't get anything for his slightly fluffed by the network Late Night show.

1.34pm: We're upto the variety part of the show now - starting with footage from Betty White's award winning gig hosting Saturday Night Live - as well as footage of Conan being dissed. Jon Stewart's comment that Tiger Woods can't stay faithful to his sports drink is still very funny. Crikey the Americans do overblown ceremony well judging by the footage they showed...Joel McHale and Jeff Probst head to the stage to present the writing award for a variety show (nominees include the Academy awards and the Tony awards) and the winner of the Emmy for writing for a Variety show goes to the 63rd Annual Tony Awards.

1:30pm: Jimmy Fallon said at the start they wanted to put the fun back into the Emmys and I think they've sort of achieved some of that - although the over reliance on musical songs and Jimmy's vocals is annoying one of my co-workers. But the Twitter intros are not working - and Matthew Morrison from Glee and Tina Fey from 30 Rock head on after someone else writes their intros. Why is it that everyone laughs at anything Tina Fey says? They're there to present the Emmy for Actress in a drama - and in the first shock of the night, this goes to Kyra Sedgwick - not the Good Wife's Julianna Margulies. Kyra gives her Emmy to Tina Fey to hold while she thanks a lot of people - Tina doesn't complain. Kyra gets a scrap of paper out and thanks the cast and a list of people including her "kids who let her fly away when she needed to." That's quite a shock with Julianna being the fave. Oh no, Jimmy's back with the guitar.

1.23pm: Musical tribute to 3 shows we lost this year - aka Jimmy Fallon dressed as Elton John a la Candle In the Wind. Jack Bauer's inability to go to the toilet during 24 is part of the lyrics. Now Law And Order's being given the musical send off - the writers have done a good job of  writing some tight material for Mr Fallon. Now it's farewell to Lost a la Green Day The Time of Your Life.Pretty funny stuff. "The Island it was mythical but in the end they died - I didn't understand it but I tried" is the refrain of the song. Many of us agree. Oh sorry - spoiler alert.

1.19pm: The leads of JJ Abrams' upcoming new show Undercovers Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Boris Kodjoe are up looking back at awards already handed out last week - and John Lithgow and Anne Margret are on stage to hand out the award for best series directing . And the Emmy goes to Steve Shill for Dexter.

1.10pm: Edie Falco's back on stage after nabbing the Emmy for Actress in a comedy- and is here to present award for Lead actor in a drama series - the nominees are Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad, Michael C. Hall, Dexter, Kyle Chandler, Friday Night Lights, Hugh Laurie, House, Matthew Fox, Lost , Jon Hamm, Mad Men -and it's number three in a row for winner Bryan Cranston for Breaking Bad.  His first thought is that there were 200 text messages to have been sent to the fellow nominees who lost out - a nice thing to say but that won't help the losers. Poor Lost. He dedicates the award to his wife and daughter who he "loves more than baseball" - Vince Gilligan, the former X Files writer is being thanked too - but nothing too controversial for Bryan. Coming shortly the cast of True Blood - are they teaming up with Glee do we think? And there's a musical tribute on the way to the shows that have gone to the big viewing room in the sky - although will be available in DVD collector's box sets soon (and of course on Blu Ray too).

1.09pm: Jimmy reads more of the tweets they've been sent in - Nathan Fillion of Castle and Emily Deschanel of Bones are next  up to present - supporting actress in a drama is what they're there to present - and the Emmy goes to Archie Punjabi of The Good Wife . As she takes to the stage, she says it's "Like a dream come true" before launching into a list of people to thank - before co-dedicating the award to Christine Baranski and that the award "is amazing for my career". So is that code for I've been written out of Series 2 and am available do we think?

1.03pm: Outstanding actor in a supporting series - the actors who play Ben and Locke are up for this (from Lost) And the winner is Aaron Paul from Breaking Bad. What?? How could Terry O'Quinn have lost out for the last year of Lost??? And man, he looks a little angry and disappointed to be honest. Aaron Paul though is humbled and thanking the writers of Breaking Bad as well as his family- "Mom it's OK I Love you" he says - before remembering to thank Bryan Cranston his costar and the lead of the show...not a good career move do you think? Michael Emerson aka Ben from Lost looked ok with the loss - but I'm hoping that doesn't mean Lost will be lost in its final year - it's about time it got some Emmy love.

1pm: Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni from SVU are here to present the next award; outstanding writing for a drama series. The writers reveal what the networks asked them to change. The writers of Lost said they were asked why a six toed statue was on the show and to change it. So they made it a four toed statute. Cue laughs - and a bit of truth methinks. And the winner is... Mad Men. The writers seem to be humbled and are thanking each other for believing in the work, the cast and the crew -Everyone who works on the show reads the scripts and gives me feedback one of them says. That must be fun.

12.56pm: We're back in the Nokia Theatre - with the accountants of Ernst and Young getting their time in the spotlight. And Mr Fallon's back with the guitar with Julianna Margulies giving him a few smacks across the face. She does comedy well. It's the drama awards next as we look back on the year that was - and say goodbye to 24 and reliving that hideous shooting at the end of Grey's Anatomy as part of the montage - as well as that shocking loss that Hotch suffered in Criminal Minds this year. It's been a powerhouse year for dramas really - the end of Lost, the loss of 24 - the cheers going up now for Jack's sacrifice on Lost - and it all ends with Matthew Fox closing his eyes which of course was the last shot from the Island.

12.49pm: Wil Arnett and Keri Russell are up to present an award - and Wil's been busted for a dirty rhyme. Nice work sir - Reality Emmy goes to Top Chef , a fourth Emmy nomination in a row. 300 people appear to be on the stage to accept the award - and none of them have anything major to say (Their words not mine). The chefs they work with are being thanked - and if you can make it as a chef, this is the last week to apply for MasterChef New Zealand - what are you waiting for? Apply here for MasterChef NZ Series 2 - and now!

12.45pm: "This is the most ridiculous thing which has ever happened - I am not Funny." Edie Falco there - aka Carmela Soprano - would you argue? Still it's her fourth win and that's impressive - almost as impressive as the thanks list she's reeling out. Jimmy Fallon is serenading the crowd - with a reality song. And the highlights from the last year of reality shows are now up. Fat people, things smashing, people slipping off things, the Bachelor, the Kardashians - the list of shows is amazing - and Undercover Boss USA is there too (you can watch free episodes of Undercover Boss USA on TVNZ Ondemand too.) As are the incredibly banal moments from Jersey Shore. It's always impressive how many reality shows there are these days.

12.44pm: It's Neil Patrick Harris time with his very smooth looking tux. And he outs Jimmy Fallon, a gay man hosting the Emmys 2 years in a row. Outstanding actress in a comedy is now up - could this be Edie Falco's win? The bookies think so. and it goes to Edie Falco for Nurse Jackie.

12.40pm: So we're 40 minutes in and to be honest, it's kind of zipping by quite quickly - with the younger generation of shows doing quite well this year; the Glees, the Modern Family and Big Bang Theory (with 3 series under their belt)

12.38pm: Sheldon is shocked - and thanks his castmates saying they're motivating and inspiring.. He says to work on the character is beyond his dreams. He's reeling off a list of names - not bad for someone who says he wasn't prepared to say anything. Thank goodness people have stuff prepared in the back of their mind eh?

12.37pm: Eva Longoria Parker and LL Cool J head to the stage to present Outstanding lead actor in a comedy series - Jim Parsons, Larry David, Matthew Morrison, Tony Shalhoub, Steve Carell and Alec Baldwin - that's quite the list and a great set of series. But the winner is Jim Parsons of the Big Bang Theory - step up Sheldon.

12.34pm: Ryan says he's shocked. He's certainly got no sign of emotion on his face - deadpan is clearly de rigeur. He dedicates the award to his teachers who taught him to sing and fingerpaint. Nice. Modern Family skit now up - they've adopted Stewie from Family Guy. Good line from Stewie to Ed O'Neill that it's nice Al Bundy's doing a show he can talk about at dinner parties. Touche Mr Bundy, touche. Next up Modern Family 3D with Sofia Vergara...can see how that would work. Mitchell and Cameron as Two and a Half Men. Although am loving the idea of Phil's brother being played by George Clooney. It's a series of updated Modern Family pitches with George Clooney being the main punchline. And it works. Just.  But I know ladies will be swooney for Clooney.

12.32pm: Emmy for directing in a comedy series. Ryan Murphy looks like one of the Observers from Fringe . It's uncanny. And worrying. I'm not sure these pre scripted inserts are working. Although Ryan Murphy the director of Glee and writer/ director of Nip/Tuck has won it.

12.30pm: Lauren Graham and Matthew Perry present next - with Jimmy Fallon using his powers of six degrees of separation to get from Graham to the West Wing. It's another American thing. And now Mr Perry is mocking Lauren Graham for doing similar roles. That set of jokes (and I use that in a loose term) fell flat.  They're looking back at those who've already got an Emmy last week - take a look at the list here.

12.28pm: So we're back soon - and lead actor in a comedy is going to be the next award. A tough category this one with the likes of Jim Parsons, Larry David, Matthew Morrison, Tony Shalhoub, Steve Carell and Alec Baldwin. I wonder if this one will be about the Glee too...

12.23pm: "Outlandish" - Jane Lynch shares the award with her fellow cast members and is now thanking her lord and creator Ryan Murphy for the role of a lifetime. I don't think she's talking about the tracksuits she has to wear though. So this year looks like it will be the year of the Emmy newcomer I think. And now we head to another ad break. Already?

12.22pm: Stephen Colbert heads to the stage to present - with his opening Good Evening ladies - and women. Many of you look lovely tonight. There's scattered laughter. But he's there to present the award for a supporting actress in a comedy citing such influences as Dustin Hoffman's Tootsie. This could be another Modern Family win - although there's a Glee lurker in the wings...And the winner for supporting actress in a comedy is Jane Lynch in Glee.

12.21pm: Steve Levitan talks about how mind blowing this award is - and that he and co writer Christopher Lloyd got the idea when out riding a horse together...Steve's thanking the cast for making it so easy - and all their "wives without whom we'd been dating around a lot." He's got some making up to do later.

12.17pm: Back after the first break - and with Jimmy Fallon looking a little frightened to be honest - but they're using Twitter to ask for presenter introductions. Jim Parsons from the Big Bang and Sofia Vergara are up - Sofia's rocking some of that trademark smut with her saying that she's always been a fan of the "Big bang". They're presenting for the award for the writing for a comedy series -the writers from Modern Family are showing why they're funny - and they take the award. So Modern Family 2 so far then.

12:12pm - First nomination, first win - that's not bad going - Eric says all he wanted to be was a clown in the circus - well done sir, you've exceeded your goal - and now Ed O'Neill gets a shout out after being dissed by the Emmys. Honestly, Modern Family is one of the smartest comedies on TV - and Eric seems to know it complimenting the writers and co-workers - and he's dedicating the award to his family - saying it's going home to his mum and dad. It's nice to see someone looking actually shocked and gobsmacked to have won - it's kind of humbling.

12:11pm: First up is the Odd Couple - Jon Hamm and Betty White presenting and talking sexual chemistry - outstanding supporting actor in a comedy goes to - Eric Stonestreet from Modern Family aka Cameron.

12:08pm: A look back at the year in comedy - and with montages of 30 Rock, The Office, that classic butt pressing moment in Modern Family, Cougar Town, Glee and Entourage, Nurse Jackie, Monk, Old Christine (wondering if she'll win after the network dissing her show), How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory , Curb - it's been a great year for Comedy.

12:06pm - Poor Conan - gets a serve from Fallon about how badly his nighttime show went - oh Conan we still love you. First category is comedy.

12:05pm: And the crowd goes wild as the Emmys begin with a standing ovation. And now Mr Fallon's rocking a tux top and jeans for trousers - I knew that was cool. Take a breath Mr Fallon as he urges everyone to have some fun. And then dons another guitar...

12:04pm: Who knew Hurley aka Jorge Garcia could sing so well? And Jon Hamm really sounds like Springsteen. Fallon now mocking the Born to Run cover...quite amusing start as they flounce into the Nokia Theatre here - and now Mr Fallon is rocking them with Randy J from American Idol...

12:01pm So here we go - Jimmy Fallon's doing a skit with the Glee club and Tina Fey - but dissing Kate Gosselin. Nice diss showbiz friends. First Betty White viewing of the night as she teaches Jon Hamm how to shake it. And now Jimmy's been splatted by Jane Lynch - and now Tina Fey got a chestful too. Hurley from Lost is shaking it down too...terrifying in many ways. So I'm thinking this year it's all about the Glee as they do the Born To Run moment. Quite well actually.
