An autopsy has revealed that actor Corey Haim had an enlarged heart and water-filled lungs when he died, CNN reports.

His mother Judy Haim told entertainment website Access Hollywood  the coroner's office had called her with the results which said Haim died of pulmonary congestion and that he also had an enlarged heart and water in the lungs.

CNN says the coroner is waiting for toxicology test results before deciding what killed him.

Haim, a Hollywood teen star of the 1980s who became as famous for his struggles with substance abuse as his acting, died in Los Angeles on Thursday morning.

He was 38.

Ed Winter, assistant chief of the Los Angeles County coroner's office, told local reporters Haim had been suffering flu-like symptoms and that Judy, who lived with the actor, found him distressed in the early morning hours and called paramedics who took him to hospital.

He says some prescription medication was found in Haim's apartment but "no illicit drugs".

Gossip website TMZ says the medications found in the apartment included the generic versions of Vicodin and Valium and the same doctor prescribed them shortly before Haim died.
