A history of family health problems persuaded singer John Rowles to pull out of the Dancing With the Stars television series, his sister says.
Cheryl Waetford said they lost a father and a brother at a young age.
She said Rowles had blood pressure problems and at 61, pulling out of the television show was "the sensible thing to do."
Waetford, the inspiration for Rowles' 1969 hit Cheryl Moana Marie said Rowles had a sudden turn last Saturday which left her "very worried" and she was relieved he had withdrawn.
She said her father died from a heart attack at 57 and her brother died of a stroke at 59.
She took Rowles to an Auckland emergency clinic last Saturday when he complained he felt unwell and he was found to have low blood pressure.
Earlier this week Rowles said he was exhausted and unable to continue with the demands of rehearsing and appearing on the show.
"I have been advised to rest," he said.
