Fox has announced talkshow host Ellen DeGeneres will replace Paula Abdul as a judge on American Idol.

According to Variety DeGeneres will join existing judges Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi, beginning in January.

Abdul quit the top-rated US television show at the beginning of August.

Making her announcement on her Twitter feed, Abdul said "with sadness in my heart", she had decided not to return to Idol.

Abdul, 47, a singer/dancer turned TV personality, had been a mainstay of the show since it was launched in 2002.

Since her departure, guest judges have been taking part in filming the show, including Victoria Beckham .
