Anyone who tuned into the debut episode of American Idol in the US hoping to see new judge Ellen DeGeneres will have been disappointed.

Unfortunately, DeGeneres isn't on the audition shows that traditionally kick off each new season and won't join the Idol judging panel until the show goes live.

Fellow Simon Cowell had earlier announced that he'll be leaving the show to focus on an American version of his highly successful UK show, X Factor.

Cowell will stick around for this season of American Idol, and he has already dropped some hints that he and Paula Abdul might be working together again soon.

DeGeneres has joked that she is trying not to take Cowell's decision to quit the show, just as she joins, personally.

During her chatshow on Monday, DeGeneres laughed:

"This will be Cowell's last season and he announced he's leaving on my first day. I'm trying not to take it personally."

She added: "He wanted a change and I wish him all the luck in the world hosting The Tonight Show."
