Russell Crowe will not be wearing tights when he plays Robin Hood - and the Sheriff of Nottingham - in a new Hollywood epic.

Crowe is due to play both characters in a plot twist for Nottingham, a film to be directed by Ridley Scott.

But there won't be any lycra leggings in sight as tights did not exist in the period when the film is set.

"We have done research and they hadn't been invented," Crowe was quoted as saying in Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper, adding the film could be some time in the making.

"We'll take our time. You shouldn't do Robin Hood unless you do it really f......ing well."

Scott fuelled speculation over the Gladiator star's part in the movie with a cryptic explanation of his dual role.

"It's a good old adjustment of characters," Scott said.

"One becomes the other. It changes."

Other reports said the film would initially portray the Sheriff as the more noble character, while some have suggested Robin Hood could turn out to be his secret identity.
