One of the young fashion designers gathered in Dunedin from around the globe is about to win the opportunity to show their collection at a prestigious show.
The Emerging Designer awards, now in their sixth year, are a chance to give up and coming fashionistas a chance to compete on an international stage.
Melanie Child is one of the 30 finalists with her entry call "Manu-fractured".
"It's a study into my simultaneous repulsion and fascination with mass consumption and its by-product," she says.
It is an entirely sustainable collection made from vinyl records, curtain hooks and beer tabs.
"I'm just inspired by mass manufacturing and the waste it creates," she says.
Auckland's Lan Yu is competing with a flavour of martial arts created from her own cultural background.
"I want to overturn all traditional rules ... creating my own fantasy," Yu says.
Wellington's Alexandra Walker has an obsession with stripes. Her plan is to make people feel uncomfortable.
"It was all about distorting the form and using stripes to overwhelm people," she says.
For the new designers, it is not only a chance to show their collections internationally, but also a chance to share Dunedin's railway catwalk with fashion's elite at the ID fashion show, if they win.
"It's a great opportunity and I'm terrified, but I'm also really excited," Child says.
