US R'n'B singer Chris Brown has apologised publicly for the first time for the domestic altercation that took place between him and pop princess Rihanna.
A video of Brown speaking out about the incident appeared on the
internet on Tuesday morning (NZT).
In the clip,
Brown spoke directly to the camera and
apologised to his former girlfriend and his fans.
"I've told Rihanna countless times and I'm telling you today, I'm truly, truly sorry that I wasn't able to handle the situation both differently and better."
This is the first time he has talked of the incident, which happened five months ago.
According to the police report, on the eve of the 2009 Grammy Awards, Brown and Rihanna engaged in an altercation that left the "Umbrella" star with facial contusions.
"Since February, my attorney has advised me not to speak out, even though, ever since the incident, I wanted to publicly express my deepest regret and accept full responsibility.
"I wish I had the chance to live those few moments again, but unfortunately I can't," he says. "What I did was inexcusable. I am very sad and very ashamed at what I've done. My mother and my spiritual leaders taught me better than that...No one is more disappointed in me than I am."
The 20-year-old singer, scored a plea deal last month after pleading guilty and hence avoided jail time.
He says he will be speaking about that fateful evening further,
but wanted to express his sorrows now.
Brown says he has mended his ways.
"I have sought and I am continuing to seek help to ensure that what occurred in February can never happen again," he says.
"What I did was unacceptable. 100%. I can only ask and pray that you forgive me please. I hope that others learn from my mistake. I intend to live my life so that I am truly worthy of the term role model."
