Award winning actress Cate Blanchett is "absolutely fine" following a "minor incident" during a Sydney Theatre Company production which left her with a head injury.

The incident occurred during A Streetcar Named Desire performance on Wednesday night.

Sydney Theatre Company spokesman Tim McKeough said Blanchett was hit in the head by a radio prop, forcing the performance to be cancelled and audience members evacuated.

"There was a minor incident on stage that unfortunately did injure Cate," he said.

One theatre goer told Macquarie Radio network it soon became clear the incident wasn't part of the play.

"She had blood streaming down the back of her head and blood on the back of her neck," she said.

McKeough denied reports the radio prop had been thrown at her.

"That is not correct. There is no point in the show in which the radio is thrown at her," he said.

"Evidentially there was a moment when another actor lifted the prop above his head and she somehow sustained a minor blow to the head."

McKeough said Blanchett was confident she would be on stage again on Thursday night.
